Community-Hospital Nutrition
Education Program (CHNEP)
As part of
the CVI’s mission to educate the public on cardiovascular health, the Community-Hospital Nutrition Education
Program (CHNEP) was established in December 2000 to provide hospitals and community organizations in the Delaware
Valley with a grant to develop and execute a heart health nutrition education
program.
The
goal of the program was and currently remains to motivate program participants
to adopt a heart healthy
diet. Due to the initial success of these grants, the CHNEP has expanded over
the past six years and it is estimated that over 20,000 people have
participated in the program.
The CVI
provides its grantee organizations with funding, educational and marketing
materials, and administrative support. Set guidelines require each site to
follow a success-driven formula. This
formula includes the following activities:
1. A presentation on heart disease by a
physician
2. A presentation on nutrition by a
nutritionist or dietician, and
3. A heart-healthy cooking
demonstration and sample tasting for audience members.
In order to
receive funding, these Guidelines must be
implemented. Each site is encouraged and
supported in its efforts to tailor the program to meet the needs of their
intended audience. CHNEP has been
customized to address groups such as graduate
students, religious groups, worksites, hospital employees, retirement
communities, schools, and youth groups.
This type of flexibility enables the program to reach out to the
region’s diverse communities.
